Developers and Windows
Developers and Windows: "I present to you a parable of understanding, both of ourselves and others. How people believe that they know their own desires, and how others listen to them and try to bring them about, to the detriment of all. Developers don't like windows. No, not that Windows. Those windows. As in, 'how much is that doggy in the '. But surely this must be crazy talk. Everybody loves windows, right? What could be better than having a working environment with plenty of natural light? It's a mood elevator. It's a status symbol. It makes you feel valued by a valuable company that they firstly possess such lovely windows, and that secondly such a scarce resource has been allocated for your very own personal use. Whether an actual office is attached to said window is almost incidental. You've got a window! At this point we divide the people who know themselves from those who don't. Some will be nodding along, seeing where I am going with this. Others are dubious, or worse. What do I see when I walk around any office, full of 'window cubes', on a beautiful, sunny, spring afternoon? I see blinds drawn. I see boxes or strategically placed pieces cardboard or other stiff materials blotting out the sun. Why? Because bright light makes it impossible to get any work done. Because sunlight is hot, and your brain boils. So we get the "
